I think we in China should not care much about whether or not the leader of a particular country is coming to the games.
Normally, the absence of a few VIPs from the games will go unnoticed, but some of the west media choose to make an issue of it. To us, that is kind of funny. To try to make an issue of VIP will not achieve the purpose of embarrassing China. Instead, it can only serve to make a spectacle of the VIP in question. Now, let put the things right. The games are sport event. The focus of the world’s people will be on the performance of the athletes, not on the political leaders. What this country should care is how to stage together with IOC a class-A sport event and ignore any petty political manoeuvre.
We in China must learn to ignore what should be ignored. In our run to modernization, there are always noises created by some quotes. Those noises are made with the purpose of diverting us from our course. They are very familiar to us. Haven’t we experienced enough embargoes, slanders and demonization of our country by the same quotes since the founding of New China? Our best response to these noises is to manage our own house well and to ignore them. This is I suggest should also be our response to the recent noises made by European parliament and U.S House of Representatives.
As the Russian saying goes: The dogs bark, but the caravan moves on.
