On Sunday night anti-aircraft fire rose over Tripoli and several explosions were heard. The action against Col Gaddafi's military began on Saturday afternoon with French air strikes against targets in the east of the country. Characteristically defiant, Col Gaddafi called the Libyan people to revolution. The country's weapons stores had been opened, he said. All the people had been armed to defend their country against imperialist and colonialists.
