Chinese Hackers Attack U.S. Chamber of Commerce

Chinese hackers infiltrated the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, heightening tensions between Beijing and Washington, and underscoring the emergence of cyber-warfare in international relations.

Before its discovery, the breach exposed information about the Chamber’s three million corporate members, accessed 300 Internet addresses and stole six weeks’ worth of email from four Asian policy specialists.

The FBI discovered the cyber attack in May 2010, alerting the Chamber that servers in China were quietly sifting through sensitive information. Evidence suggests hackers first broke into the network in 2009.

Today after news of the hack leaked, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin denied his country’s involvement.

The U.S. counterintelligence chief, however, last month called Chinese hackers “the world’s most active and persistent perpetrators of economic espionage,” citing recent breaches with alleged ties to Beijing.

China has consistently denied all accusations it supports hackers, however, leaving U.S. investigators to continue research on their own.

If they find proof of Beijing’s involvement in security breaches, tensions will likely rise further. Until then, the Chamber’s chief operating officer, David Chavern, expects to encounter more security problems.
