                                                                                                                                        Warning that Washington should be “careful in its words and actions,” China on Monday sent a strong message to the United States in response to the new national defense strategy President Barack Obama announced last week emphasizing a renewed focus on the Asian region.
Chinese Ministry of Defense spokesman Geng Yansheng said in his country’s first reaction to the sweeping Pentagon plan, made public on Thursday, that the “accusations leveled at China by the U.S. side” are “totally baseless,” Reuters reports.
                                

“We hope that the United States will flow with the tide of the era, and deal with China and the Chinese military in an objective and rational way, will be careful in its words and actions, and do more that is beneficial to the development of relations between the two countries and their militaries,” Geng said.

Speaking from the Defense Department, Obama last Thursday unveileda strategy on maintaining a smaller military but that would also strengthen the U.S. military’s presence in the Asia-Pacific to counter a rising China.
White House press secretary Jay Carney said the new strategy reflected Obama’s belief that “we had, as a nation, not been paying enough attention to Asia.”
Responding to last week’s announcement, Geng also said in a statement posted on the Ministry of Defense website, “We have noted that the United States issued this guide to its defense strategy, and we will closely observe the impact that U.S. military strategic adjustment has on the Asia-Pacific region and on global security developments,” according to Reuters.
China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin echoed Geng’s sentiments, saying at a news conference, “The accusation targeting China in the document has no basis, and is fundamentally unrealistic,” Reuters said.
