Ukraine's secret unit of spy dolphins andseals have defected to Russia and are now swimming under Kremlin orders,officials revealed today.
官方今天宣布说，乌克兰秘密的海豚和海豹部队已经向俄罗斯叛变，现由俄罗斯指挥。

The Army has been using the underwatermammals since the 70s, and they remained under Ukrainian command after the collapseof the Soviet Union.

苏联红军自上世纪70年代就开始利用这些水下动物，苏联解体后由乌克兰指挥。

The bottlenose dolphins are trained to huntfor mines, plant bombs on hostile ships or attack enemy divers with specialknives or pistols fixed to their heads.

宽吻海豚被训练去寻找地雷，在敌船上安置炸弹或者袭击敌方潜水员，所用的武器是绑在头部的特制刀具或者手枪。

The use of bottlenose dolphins as naval assets was begun during the Cold War inSevastopol by the Soviet Union in 1973. With the collapse of the USSR, theywere enlisted in the Ukrainian navy.

冷战期间的，苏联在1973年在塞瓦斯托波尔开始使用宽吻海豚来作为武器。苏联解体后，海豚部队由乌克兰管辖。



Now after the Russian repossession of theCrimean peninsula this month, it was revealed today that the combat dolphinsare now back under Kremlin control along with all 193 military units in theregion.

‘The military dolphins serving in Crimea will be transferred to the RussianNavy,’ reported state-owned Russian news agency RIA Novosti.

In fact, Ukraine announced last month itwas preparing to cease naval training with the mammals, so the Russianannexation of the Black Sea region has probably saved the unique underwaterforce.

‘Engineers are developing new equipment fornew programmes so that the dolphins can be used more effectively in underwateroperations,’ a source said today.

‘Our specialists have been working on new equipment that transform the dolphin'ssonar signal at the point of detecting a submarine into a signal on theoperator's screen.

‘But the Ukrainian Fleet didn't have enoughmoney to develop such know how and some projects had to be closed.’

The dolphin specialists believe the Russianmilitary will fund the new developments.

While the dolphins show extraordinaryintelligence, sometimes they disobeyed their Ukrainian commanders.

Last year three of  five spy dolphinswent absent without leave in the Black Sea - apparently in search of love, butreturned to their duties shortly afterwards.

去年，黑海中五只间谍海豚中有三只无故失踪——显然是去找对象了，不过没过多久就回到自己的岗位上了。

Yury Plyachenko, a former Soviet navalanti-sabotage officer, explained that this was something that had to be takeninto account in working with the 007 mammals.

‘If a male dolphin saw a female dolphinduring the mating season, then he would immediately set off after her. But theycome back in a week or so.’

“在交配季节，如果一只雄性海豚见到一直雌性时，雄性就可能马上跟随雌海豚而去。但是一两周左右的时间就会回来了。”

And the US use dolphins as well (the firstphoto is a US dolphin). As they are VERY expensive to operate in terms of moneyand manpower (a few fish just doesn't cut it !_) I suppose the UK version wouldbe a combat mackeral !!!
