The Zhongyuan Festival, also known as UllambanaFestival among Buddhists, falls on the fifteenth day of the seventh lunarmonth, on Aug 10 this year.

中元节，在佛教徒中也被称为“盂兰盆节”，在今年阴历7月15日，即阳历8月10日到来。

Since ancient times, the Chinese have believed thatthe gates of hell open on that day and so people hold all kinds of activitiesto honor the ghosts.

从古时候起，中国人就相信在这一天，鬼门关会大开，所以人们举行各种活动来纪念鬼魂。

Therefore, the festival is also called the GhostFestival.

因此，这个节日也被称做“鬼节”。

There are two other festivals in China to honor departed spirits of ancestors: Qingming Festival (in spring) and the Chung YeungFestival (in autumn).

在中国还有两个节日是纪念逝去的灵魂的：（春季的）清明节和（秋季的）重阳节。

In both, living descendants pay homage to their deceasedancestors.

在这两个节日里，活着的后辈都要对他们死去的先祖表达敬意。

Zhongyuan Festival is distinct from these, as thedeceased are believed to visit the living.

中元节和这两个节日不同，在中元节里，人们相信去世的人会回来与活人团聚。

Buddhist doctrine says that by offering articles onthe festival day, deceased parents and relatives can be saved from badsituations in the after life.

佛教教义说，通过在节日那天供奉物品，逝去的父母和亲人就可以从逆境中被解救出来。

The Ullambana Festival of Buddhism has two meanings.

佛教的盂兰盆节有两重含义。

One is to persuade people to provide for Buddhistmonks.

一是劝说人们设斋供养僧徒。

The other is to convince people to do more charitabledeeds to release departed souls from sin and advocate family devotion.

另一个是劝说人们多做善事以解救有罪的灵魂，还有提倡家庭奉献。
