Spring Flower and Autumn Moon
When will there be autumn moon and springflowers no more, Oh, so much had happened to me before! An east wind blew into my attic again lastnight, Ruthlessly reminding me of my lost homeland inthe moonlight.
The carved rails and the jade steps should stillbe in their places, What have changed are only those rosy faces. Should you ask how much sorrow have lain in myinward, Itis just like a spring river full of water that rolls eastward.
[1] YuMei Ren (Chinese: 虞美人), the name of one kind of the tunes to which ci poems are composed, meaning thebeautiful lady Yu.
[2] LiYu (Chinese: 李煜) (937–978 AD)was the third ruler of the Southern Tang state during imperial China's FiveDynasties and Ten Kingdoms period ((937 – 978 AD).He reigned from 961 until 976, when he was captured by the invading SongDynasty armies which annexed his kingdom. It is said that this ci poem was composed during his exiledlife, because of which he died by poison on orders of Emperor Taizong of Songafter 2 years essentially as an exiled prisoner. Although an incompetent ruler,he was a representative lyric poet during his era, even to the extent of havingbeen called the "first true master" of the ci form.
