Hong Kong (CNN) -- A powerful earthquake struck aremote region of southwestern China, reportedly killing at least four peopleand causing a stampede at a primary school.

It injured more than 50 people and damaged around25,000 houses, state media reported.

The magnitude-5.9 quake struck late Saturdayafternoon in a mountainous area of Sichuan province at a depth of around 15kilometers (9 miles), according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The China Earthquake Networks Center said ithad measured the earthquake's strength at a higher magnitude of 6.3.

The quake left 54 people injured, six of them incritical condition and five others with severe injuries, China's state-run newsagency Xinhua reported Sunday, citing local authorities.

The earthquake prompted students to flee from a primaryschool in the town of Tagong, near the epicenter, and 42 of them were injuredin the ensuing rush, Xinhua said in an earlier report.

Video footage from the region showed panickedpeople dashing out of buildings as the quake struck.
