South Korea plans to deport Chinese involved in violent clashes at Seoul Olympic relay

SEOUL, South Korea: South Korea said Tuesday it will deport Chinese citizens who assaulted demonstrators protesting Beijing's policies during the Olympic torch relay in Seoul, angering South Koreans.

The violence surrounding the relay Sunday triggered a flood of strong anti-China commentary by South Korean Internet users.

Hundreds of red-clad Chinese students clashed with vastly outnumbered demonstrators who were protesting China's treatment of North Korean refugees and its crackdown on recent anti-government riots in Tibet.

During the torch relay through Seoul, some Chinese threw rocks and other objects at the protesters. One swatted at the demonstrators with a large flagpole.
"It was an incident that got people wondering how a country of 1.3 billion people will face the world when it clings to such narrow-minded nationalism," the JoongAng Ilbo, one of South Korea's main newspapers, said in an editorial Tuesday.

The Justice Ministry said it would take stern action against the Chinese involved in Sunday's violence.

Seoul police said they do not know exactly how many people were hurt in the clashes. A pro-Tibet group said at least 10 of its members were injured by Chinese wielding wooden sticks. At least four people, including a Chinese student, have been arrested.

Justice Minister Kim Kyung-han said at a Cabinet meeting that authorities will focus on arresting those who masterminded the protests by analyzing videos and photographs provided by police and citizens, according to the ministry.

Prime Minister Han Seung-soo said South Korea should take legal and diplomatic measures because the clashes "considerably" damaged its national pride.
South Korea's Foreign Ministry expressed regret Monday to China's ambassador to Seoul, Ning Fukui. The envoy said he regretted the "extreme behavior" of the Chinese protesters and offered sympathy to injured South Koreans, the ministry said.

China's Foreign Ministry, however, refused Tuesday to condemn the students' actions. It said pro-Tibet groups were to blame.

"As to the disruptions and sabotage by the separatist forces, some students upholding justice came out to safeguard the dignity of the torch — I believe that's natural," Foreign Ministry spokesman Jiang Yu said in Beijing.

A group of South Korean civic activists planned to file a lawsuit this week against the Chinese Embassy and an association of Chinese students, demanding an apology and compensation, according to the Seoul-based North Korea Human Rights' International Association.

Dozens of South Korean activists protested Tuesday near the Chinese Embassy in Seoul, chanting angry slogans and holding placards that read, "We condemn the Chinese government for promoting the violent protests."

The South Korean Foreign Ministry said China's embassy had asserted it was not behind the clashes.
