http://www.cobblestonepub.com/magazine/COB/

Free Tibet!

Tibet, perched high in the mountains between China and India, was onceruled by the Dalai Lama, a Buddhist religious leader. Since 1951,however, it has been part of the People’s Republic of China, controlledby the Chinese Communist party. As a result, the Tibetan people havelost most of their rights as citizens.

China’s central government has discouraged the preservations of Tibet’sunique culture and religion. Many Tibetans who have opposed the Chinesegovernment have been jailed or even killed. Some have been arrestedsimply for displaying the Tibetan flag or photos of the Dalai Lama. Most of Tibet’s monasteries have been closed, and citizens can nolonger practice their religion in those sacred places.

Tibetans who are suspected of any kind of protest against Chinese rulemay be arrested and detained. The Chinese government has also attemptedto name its own successor to the current Dalai Lama, who lives as anexile in northern India and has no real power in Tibet. Although Chinatried to ease some of its restrictive laws and offered the return ofsome political and religious freedoms to Tibetans, rioting in the late1980s resulted in China’s imposing martial law in 1988. Human rightsorganizations have protested China’s presence in Tibet.
