Beijing: The first Olympics in China has finally gotten underway officially with all pomp and glamour at the opening ceremony.
北京报道：中国第一次举办的奥运会正式开幕，开幕盛况充满魅力。
After seven years and billions of dollars in preparations, the ceremony began with a spectacular display of fireworks.
经过7年时间和花费数十亿美元的准备，开幕式在焰火中盛大开幕。
The festivities involve 10,000 performers and will be watched on TV by an estimated one billion people.
这次盛宴有 1 万名演员，估计将有10亿观众通过电视收看节目。
Media agency MindShare has predicted the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics will be viewed by 2.3b people, making it the most viewed live event in television history. More than 80 per cent of China, that is 1.1b out of the entire 1.3b population, will be watching the ceremony, breaking Chinese viewing records too.
媒体估计将有23亿人观看北京奥运会，使这次直播盛会成为收视记录。超过80%的中国人，也就是11亿人，将会收看开幕式，也创造收看记录。
The build-up to the event has been dominated by worries over pollution and criticism of China's human rights record.

An extra 100,000 troops and police have been deployed, and the city's main airport closed for the ceremony.
