AN Australian official and the brother of rower Duncan Free today survived a horror bus crash which killed one person and critically injured three Chinese locals near the Olympic rowing venue. Australian team doctor Greg Lovell injured his left knee in the crash and suffered cuts to his left leg when a white van and the BOCOG bus collided less than 3km from the Shunyi rowing venue.
One person in the van was killed and the three others were critically injured.
"I was half asleep, listening to my walkman when I saw the van pull in front of the bus. It was a major collision," Dr Lovell said.
Australian Olympic Committee president John Coates is at the venue and told Beijing Now that Australian rowers were definitely not on the bus.
The bus, which left the Olympic Village at 1.40pm, had only about six passengers on board.
Marcus Free, a former Olympic rower and brother of men's pair favourite Duncan Free, was on board but was not injured.
Free was able to direct traffic at the busy intersection moments after the accident.
“It was a high speed accident,” Australian rowing team spokesman David Pembroke said.
“The Australians who survived got out of the bus and began helping the victims and directing traffic. It was a heavy collision – the bus was travelling at some speed and the van veered in front of it and was simply collected by the bus.”
All Australian rowers have now arrived at the venue, ready for their semi-finals, after taking alternative routes to the venue.
