TOKYO—Toyota Motor Corp. President Akio Toyoda's apologetic public appearances in the U.S. Wednesday won a generally sympathetic response at home in Japan, with many pundits and members of the public citing the phrase "otoko naki"—crying while maintaining masculinity.
