7.8 is quite high. However, I don’t know the region in China that it hit that well. But if there was shaking all way from Beijing to Hanoi... it’s gotta be a big one. Hope it struck somewhere where there’s not a lot of people . . . then again it is China.

After taking a look at Chengdu, China, it does appear the epicenter was located near a mountain range in central China, not too close to any major population centers. We can hope for the best.

This page seems to be useful determining how close the epicenter was to population centers. It’s from the USGS.

That’s what it appears to be. However, I am currently attempting to find the same population map for other significant earthquakes. However, I cannot seem to find it. Using past maps, I was thinking we can get an estimate on how accurate these maps are in predicting damage, and so forth. Your welcome, by the way, the more information we have the better we can look at the whole picture. :-)

That particular region of China -- Sichuan Province -- hit by this quake is by far the most populated of all provinces in that nation.

This is an older population map of China, but you can see that the density of people in Chengdu is greater than anyplace else:  cHINA POPULATION AND DENSITY MAP  The buildings there are typically very old or of suspect construction if they're modern. It's not a particularly modernized province. The effects of this quake could be dreadful.

China Hit By Earthquake Updated:08:32, Monday May 12, 2008

An earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale has hit China’s Sichuan province.

The tremor was felt across the entire region - shaking buildings in the capital, Beijing, as well as the Thai capital, Bangkok, and Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam.

Quake hit near ChengduUS Geological Survey said the quake struck 57 miles north-west of the city of Chengdu at 2.29pm local time (6.28am GMT).

Some 10 million people live in Chengdu.

An eyewitness said people flooded out of buildings, but there was no sign of damage or injuries.

The area where the quake lies on the eastern edge of the Tibetan plateau, where mountains rise sharply and the population density is generally thin.

A magnitude 7.5 earthquake is considered a major event, capable of causing widespread damage and injuries in populated areas.

In the Taiwanese capital of Taipei, 100 miles off the southeastern Chinese, buildings swayed when the quake hit. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

I am a Chinese and according to my parents who are now in Chengdu, the center of the earthquake is rather a romote region.

There are no serious injuries and death in Chengdu. Some buildings did collapse but few ones got injuried. The situation is more serious in the countryside, where some houses are still builed by clay and wood.

The center of the earthquakr is in Wenchuan, a small town whose population is about 110,000, including the people live in the countryside nearby. However, the situation is not clear because the electronic communication has been destroyed. Let’s hope for the best.

900 students 'buried' in China earthquake
Premier Wen Jiabao left Beijing and tried to reach the epicentre after the tremor rocked the region at 0628 GMT at a depth of 18 miles. The decision to send such a senior leader was the first hint that officials feared a high casualty toll in a region with a large Tibetan population that has seen anti-Chinese unrest in recent weeks.

900 Trapped After Quake, China State Media Reports

BEIJING — A powerful earthquake struck a mountainous region of western China on Monday, killing at least 107 people and trapping more than 900 students beneath a collapsed high school as tremors shook buildings for hundreds of miles, according to interviews and reports in China’s state media.

Early Monday evening, Xinhua also flashed an emergency report from Dujiangyan describing that nearly 900 students were feared trapped after a high school collapsed. Most of the telephones in the city were not functioning, and the Xinhua report could not be independently verified.  Efforts to reach people near the epicenter of the bigger quake in western China were hindered by the damaged telephone system. But receptionists at different hotels in Chengdu said the earthquake appeared not to have caused any major problems in the city. Xinhua showed photographs of minor flooding caused by damage to an underground water pipe, but, as yet, the city seemed largely undamaged.

I mean seriously, your tone made me a little uncomfortable:( The media of China are focusing on this disaster and the premier has flew to Wenchuan, where 900 students were buried in ruins. We are praying for their safety. A lot of my classmates’ parents are in Sichuan, they felt worried because mobile phone communication is unavailable.

My hometown is Yichang, in which stands the Three Gorges Dam project, I called my father just now, he told me local schools won’t be open until being safe. And he said the dam is alright.( my house is 500 meters away from the dam)
P.S. thanks to all of you Americans for caring about this disaster:)

Thank you.

But I know little about this disaster either.

What I know is also from the media, the telephone system barely works, and I am still trying to get my family( I am now in Beijing).

According to Xinhua( China's State Media), the death in Beichuan( a county in Sichuan )may reach 3000-5000. I think the situation in Wenchuan would be even more sesious. However, the main road to Wenchuan has been blocked by debris flow.

A wall collapsed in my mother school and two students were killed in Mianyang. Several school's teaching building has also collapsed and more than ten students were killed, not to mention those 900 who are still trapped.

Let's just cross our hands.

The subsequent damage by the major earthquake in sichuan china will be tremendous and out of most people can image. WengChuang county( the earthquake center)is located in the Ming river (the one of largest tributary of Yangzi river),the rock of the both bank of the Ming rive is loose, and the earthquake will cause large scale landslide ,and the river interdiction could be forescasted, even worse there are lot of dams in the Wengchuang county, God bless

I watched a Modern Marvels special on the 3 Gorges damn project a few months ago and I remember them saying that some engineers were concerned that the huge weight of all the water backed up by the damn may cause earthquakes in that area.

Hopefully this wasn't the start of those fears becoming reality.

It had a magnitude of 7.8 Mw according to the State Seismological Bureau of China and United States Geological Survey. The earthquake was felt as far away as Beijing and Shanghai, where office buildings swayed with the impact and Vietnam capital Hanoi. The closest major city from the earthquake's epicenter is Chengdu.

The epicenter was at 31.084°N, 103.267°E, in Wenchuan County, Ngawa Prefecture, 90 km northwest of Chengdu, Sichuan, China, with its main tremor so far occurring at 14:28:04 local time (06:28:04 am GMT) on Monday 12 May 2008. Early reports of the earthquake's Richter scale magnitude ranged from 7.6 to 8.0. Five major aftershocks ranging in magnitude from 4.0 to 6.0 were recorded within two hours of the main tremor.

The 7.3 earthquake in Alaska a couple years ago did little damage aside from moving the Alyeska Pipeline a few feet on its piers. It was felt in New Orleans, which is a couple thousand miles away.

No doubt the injuries in this earthquake are from heavy objects falling on people, which would include buildings that collapse. Anybody out in the open would get a ride for a few seconds and no damage.

Looks like this earthquake may well have been triggered by the continual movement of the Indian plate into the Asian continent. The Himalaya Mts were, and are still being, formed from this slow motion collision which began around 50 million years ago.

Himalaya-formation.gif

Geology of the Himalayas (Origins and growth):
"In the Upper Cretaceous (84 Million yrs ago), the Indian plate began its very rapid northward drift at an average speed of 16 cm/year, covering a distance of about 6000 km [~3600 miles], until the collision of the northwestern part of the Indian passive margin with Eurasia in early Eocene time (48-52 Million yrs ago). Since that time and until today, the Indian continent continues its northwards movement at a slower but still surprisingly fast rate of ~5 cm/year..."

It is obviously an official contact. This follows a call on the Red Phone from pres Bush directly to the Premier of the PRC earlier this morning offering any aid they wanted and they said they would like to register three agents on FR. So, it is done.

It seems that you would accuse me as an agent no matter what I said, but I am gonna say this once: I am a student in Peking Univ, China. I am no agent of any office.

I personally do not agree with taking Taiwan. From my observation, Chinese government would be satisfied with keeping a not bad relationship with Taiwan in recent years instead of taking it, considering that Ma is now the president of Taiwan. As for nuclear exchange——do you think Chinese are crazy and stupid?

I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt for 24 hours- only because of the millions of people who live in that region and that power, cell towers etc are knocked offline.

Even so- it’s unlikely they’re telling us all they know ...

At least today it’s easier to get news out of China than back in 1976 after the Tangshan earthquake, it was probably months before anyone outside of the region had any idea of the severity of that quake.

Disproven, by what you wrote below:

I personally do not agree with taking Taiwan. [引用]

The fact you can post this proves you have unrestricted and unmonitored internet access -- not available to citizens in China. The ability to express such a sentiment is available only to government-approved agents. Look, I ain't mad at ya. I know everyone's gotta have a job. This is probably just a job to you.

From my observation, Chinese government would be satisfied with keeping a not bad relationship with Taiwan in recent years instead of taking it, considering that Ma is now the president of Taiwan. [引用]

I will consider that the official government position of the PRC, and send this information to my commanding officer. Ain't it grand when intelligence agencies work together? LOL

With absolutely no statistics or history to back me up, I must say I'd rather spend millions now, to help innocents than millions later on weapons. Helping others when you can is right. It may also be good politics.

Amazing, isn’t it?

From your link:

~snip~

Are average Chinese Internet users afraid of the government’s Internet control system?

No. To begin with, not that many of them are even aware of it. The government discourages upfront discussion of the Great Firewall’s existence, what sites or search terms are forbidden, etc. Moreover, to the extent people are aware of it, indications are that they are hardly up in arms. My wife, Deborah Fallows, represents the Pew Internet project in China. In March of this year she released a study showing that a strong majority of Chinese Internet users welcomed the idea of controls over Web content and thought it was only natural that the government would do the controlling. This is a startling concept to many Westerners, but she explains the logic of it here.

I don't trust them if they said the sky is blue!! I don't trust these new FR members on here either. They are in China and they happen to join an American Political site. Nope, Sorry, I don't buy it!

You are correct. Our agency has traced the internet connections of these three 'not government agents, no no no' back to the known IP of a special Intelligence Unit in the PRC.

We will assign a team, of course.

I see you know little about China's internet restriction..... Please, find anyone who knows Chinese and is not an agent by your judgement, then google "Taiwan" in Chinese( which would be 台湾). You will see how many Chinese have expressed their opinions, though most of which are stupid, I think. And I don't have unrestricted internet access. To think I am unmonitored just because I can post "Taiwan"? So naive....

My parents also lives in Sichuan currently, the North-East of that province while I am in Dalian city now. They told me everything was ok so far.

Disastrously, the death toll has risen to 8533.

No news from county at epicenter of China quake—Xinhua

BEIJING — There has been no news from the county in southwest China at the epicenter of a deadly earthquake, more than nine hours after the disaster struck on Monday, state press reported.

All lines of communication had been cut with Wenchuan county, which has a population of 112,000 people, Xinhua reported, adding rescue teams had been unable to reach there because the roads had been destroyed.

I believe that since most sites are ‘BANNED’ in the PRC, we can’t believe you. What I’d like to say is that I wish the PRC would become a democray - of course, I’d like the US to become it, too.
