DEFENCEofficials who launched a covert inquiry into the relationship betweenthe Defence Minister Joel Fitzgibbon and businesswoman Helen Liubelieve she has had links with China's military intelligence agency.
Theofficials formed the view that Ms Liu was linked to Chinese militaryintelligence after inquiries into her business activities, her contactwith Chinese diplomatic who consular officials assessed to beintelligence officers and her connections with senior Chinese CommunistParty officials and People's Liberation Army officers, Fairfax reports.
The officials, who are the target of two high-powered inquiries, said concerns about a potential security risk relating to Mr Fitzgibbonwere dismissed.
"We looked at Fitzgibbon and Liu, and the links between them raisedreal concerns that we thought were worthy of an official investigation, but it was clearly too much of a hot potato for the hierarchy,'' anofficial told Fairfax.
Much of the alleged investigation was conducted outside work hours and was carried out without using defence IT systems.
"There were limits to what we could do and we didn't get all of thestory, but what has come out later about Fitzgibbon's failure todeclare trips to China only strengthened the concerns,'' the officialsaid.
"There are big questions about just why the minister has been soobligated to Helen Liu and what the full extent of their relationshiphas been.'' |
