Ferguson plays down China trade rift reports

Resources Minister Martin Ferguson says he isconfident Australia's trade relationship with China will stay strongamid reports it may put trade bans on mining giants BHP Billiton andRio Tinto.
China has criticised Rio Tinto's decision to merge their iron oreassets in the Pilbara after the company walked away from a deal withChinese mining company Chinalco.
A report today in Fairfax newspapers says China is threatening atrade ban on the two companies if they do not seek permission to joinfrom Chinese competetion regulators.
China is one of Australia's top five trading partners, with exportsto the country helping Australia keep afloat during the globalrecession.
Mr Ferguson has told ABC 2 News Breakfast that he does not believe the deal will do long-term damage to the relationship.
"From time to time there's going to be argy bargy about foreign investment considerations," he said.
"China has got to understand that the arrangement between BHP and Rio is a commercial outcome."
"Obviously China is disappointed. You can expect some angst but Iactually believe that we'll return to a normal commerical alliance in avery short period." |
