Dozens of Australians in quarantine in China for swine flu are likening the experience to being in jail.
They are calling on Australian authorities to do more to improve their conditions.
China's swine flu quarantine program has been stepped up at major international airports, targeting aircraft from countries including Australia where the virus has been detected.
At least 59 Australians from three separate flights are being held for up to a week in Shanghai.
Tom Hands was only supposed to be transiting through Shanghai on his way to a holiday in Canada when Chinese health officials quarantined him.
That was last Wednesday.
"It's been a bit like a jail and we kind of just hang around the same room and go a little bit insane," Mr Hands said.
He says he has not had fresh food in the hotel where he is being held.
Mike Dwyer, who is also in quarantine, says the Australian consulate could be helping but is not.
"They don't seem to want to get involved at all," he said.
"They don't seem to want to criticise the Chinese authorities."
The two men are due to be released tomorrow, but dozens more Australians are being held at hotels around the city. |
