TOKYO — Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso Sunday cancelled his visit to the disaster-hit western Yamaguchi prefecture, where 14 people died in landslides, as torrential rain continued to pound the area.
"Heavy rain is still falling in Yamaguchi and is forecast to continue. It is feared more disasters could occur," Aso told reporters before he was to take off at Tokyo's Haneda airport. "I have decided to cancel the inspection there today," he said.
Aso had planned a helicopter inspection of disaster-hit Hofu city in Yamaguchi prefecture, where a series of landslides and floods due to torrential rain killed 14 people early in the week.
Further heavy rains have hit the western Chugoku region, including Yamaguchi prefecture, and the southern main island of Kyushu, killing at least seven more people with two others missing since Friday.
The latest confirmed fatality was a 78-year-old Hideo Hirayama who was buried under mud in southern Fukuoka prefecture, a local police spokesman said.
"Rescuers also found a car buried in a landslide," the spokesman said. "They see at least one person still in the car."
A 67-year-old women from Kitakyushu city, southern Fukuoka prefecture, was also found dead after she went missing Friday night, a local official said.
Continuing bad weather in the prefecture Sunday hindered rescuers from resuming the search for a 61-year-old woman and her daughter, 34, feared to be buried under mud after their home was hit by a landslide, another official said.
The Japan Meteorological Agency warned a rainfall of up to 70 millimetres (2.8 inches) in an hour would continue in the Kyushu and Chugoku regions until Monday morning.
