The country with the world's most executions, China, is going to reduce its use of the death penalty.
China is looking to execute what is described as only "an extremely small number" of serious offenders.
This is according to vice-president of the supreme people's court, Zhang Jun.
His comments were quoted in the China Daily newspaper, which reported that there are no plans to abolish the death penalty.
"Judicial departments should use the death penalty in the least number of cases possible," Zhang Jun said.
According to Amnesty International, over 1,700 people were executed in China last year.
China has been criticised for executing people found guilty of non-violent, economic crimes.
In January 2007 the supreme people's court regained the final say in all death penalty cases.
This was an attempt by the authorities to reign in the widespread use of execution |
