LEADERS in China's Xinjiang region dismissed aclaim by an exiled Uighur leader that nearly 10,000 people disappearedafter ethnic unrest this month, state media reported.
Xinjiang Government spokeswoman Hou Hanmin said the claim by Rebiya Kadeer was "not even worth a counterreaction", according to the English-language Global Times, which said in a report that the claim was "groundless".
Ms Kadeer, a former businesswoman living in the United States, saidthat close to 10,000 people "disappeared in one night" after violentclashes in Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang in China's northwest.
"Uighur people who were there must have been either killed or taken away," she said in Tokyo.
The Xinjiang spokeswoman said: "If there were more than 10,000missing, how many more of them would have taken part in the riot?"
The Chinese Government says Ms Kadeer is behind the July 5 violence, which left 197 people dead, most of them Han Chinese killed by angryUighur mobs. China has said police opened fire to prevent furtherbloodshed and that more than 1400 people were detained for theirinvolvement in the unrest.
Ms Kadeer, head of the US-based World Uighur Congress, has denied any involvement in the riots. |
