Chinse Communists turn to democracy?

BEIJING, Sept. 19 (UPI) --
Leaders pledged Friday to encourage internal democracy in the Communist Party of China to maintain the party's cohesiveness.
The Central Committee announced its plans after a four-dayclosed-door meeting, Xinhua, the official government news agency,reported.
The party is preparing for the anniversary in October of the 60th anniversary of the People's Republic of China.
Two years ago, Hu Jintao, who is both president of the country andgeneral secretary of the Central Committee, has endorsed greaterdemocracy, calling for more openness in a speech to the 2007 PartyCongress.
"The realization of intra-Party democracy must rely on the guaranteeof all Party members' democratic rights to know, to participate, tovote and to supervise all internal affairs of the Party," he saidseveral months ago.
The party has about 76 million members of a total population of 1.35 billion.
