BEIJING: The state-run China Radio International is trying to buy frequencies to launch services in India in a move to widen its influence in the country. It currently broadcasts in four Indian languages - Hindi, Bengali, Urdu and Tamil - from Beijing.

Seen to be building a web of influence across the neighbourhood, Beijing runs AM and FM stations in Sri Lanka, Myanmar and seven other countries. It has also been building ports across the region and boosting connectivity.

"We've been trying to buy frequencies in India and are talking to some Indian companies who would like to work with us," CRI's deputy editor-in-chief Weigong Ma told TOI.

"We help build bridges, open up new windows and tell the world about the real China, the true China. We attract tourists to China and also tell Chinese about the places they can visit abroad. We recently launched a special service to promote Chinese tourism."

He said FM stations are crucial in expanding listenership in the changing media scenario.

CRI broadcasts programmes in 61 languages and propagates the Chinese foreign ministry's point of view on international affairs. CRI also beams programmes for Tibetans in China, Nepal and India.

CRI director-general Wang Gengnian said the radio service recently attracted more than 5 million foreign voters in an online poll to choose 10 most attractive tourist destinations in China. Indian diplomat Arun Sahoo was among the diplomats who gave prizes to the municipal heads of these cities at Beijing's Great Hall of the People on Tuesday. The destinations included Luoyang, which has an Indian temple.

"Some of these cities are unable to communicate with foreign tourists directly. This is where we come in,'' said CRI director Peng Li. CRI has also ventured into Internet radio service to widen its reach. ``It's also a low cost option and easy to establish," said Peng.

One thing we have to learn from China i.e. punishing the culprits properly for which China's Radio can give more information. Many of our politicians would have hanged if they were in China. Recently how many politicians looted our exchequer and roaming around carrying 2 to 3 cell phones at a time like kings without shame.

Director Peng Li. No need to jump very hard. Just talk to Our Environment Minister Mr Ramesh. He has resolved the issue of import of telecom equipment from China very favourably for the chinese manufacturers and he will be very pleased to get GoI to allocate more than a thousand AM, FM and also one PM channel which is being used by only one person at the moment and that can be easily shared. No Worries Peng LI.

Who is interested here in India about Chinese radio and news? Also, It may not be liked by some Bollywood music directors, who were copying Chinese tunes and our great poets were giving words to those.

What a scenario!! They are throwing google out of their country for not repecting their laws. They do not like if someone discussed Tibet or Taiwan in any part of the world. Will they allow our FM radio to broadcast in China . Will they give the freedom that they expect here in India. Better our babus keeps all this in minds before allowing them.

Chinese broadcasts will be a tough act to follow. It will be the next Radio Ceylone- only bigger and better. I know how the entire nation would tune into Binaca Geetmala with Amir Sayani I guess it was! All India Radio and the national TV is a disgrace to Broadcast Journalism. Wonder why though?

It reflects the failure of Indian government with regard to radio entertainment. With Tamil stations restricted to Tamil Nadu and only Hindi and English allowed across states, CRI has seen this as an opportunity for a very long time. Incidentally, CRI's Tamil division gets the highest number letters compared to its other divisions. CRI's Tamil website also gets significant viewership and is known for their impeccable command and purity of the language.

In Assam, the Medium wave is full of Bangladeshi and Chinese radio stations. We can get few local stations of AIR with extremely poor receptions.

Please leave India alone. China is never India's friend. China is supporting Pakistan - the arch rival of India unconditionally, even though they know Pakistan is the centre point of all terrorism. Instead of criticizing terrorism and support to eradicate the same, China promised to give billions of dollar to Pakistan.

You guys are a bunch of idiots. And Times of India lead the team. Radio China has been broadcasting for a long period of time as BBC , VOA Radio Moscow ABC , Radio Sweden etc. Similarily AIR also have foreign services which they broadcast all over Asia ME and some parts of Africa. Can you guys really think using the upper parts of the body.

If China wants an audience for its broadcasts, let them take up restaurants in major cities, and offer all the broadcasts they want along with free Chinese food and they will have all the listeners they want. It will be a bargain, they will not only be propagating the Chinese viewpoint, but Chinese culture as well. They can also ordain that everyone must use chopsticks.

Let the world live in peace. If it is for friendship and not for any negative use. we should join hands, Our Indian security experts should study this and move forward to allow or not to allow. Just remember a peace world without a negative mind to grab the land of others, or steal others property, developing a nation while destroying other nations- All countries and province should look for their and develop their own land
