The Federal Government has revealed plans to spendhundreds of billions of dollar to dramatically expand Australia'smilitary capability.
The much-awaited Defence white paper clearly outlines the FederalGovernment's intention for Australia to be able to defend itselfagainst any threat in a changing Asia-Pacific region.
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has launched the Government's long-term Defence blueprint on board HMAS Stewart in Sydney Harbour.
The white paper forecasts that while the United States will remainthe most powerful nation in the world for decades to come, itsinfluence in the Asia-Pacific region is likely to decline as China'smilitary strength grows.
The paper says the speed of China's military build-up has thepotential to cause the region concern if it is not carefully explained.
The strategy outlined in the paper clearly shows the Governmentwants the Defence Force to be able to defend Australia against anypotential threat and to be able to do that offshore.
The decision to acquire land-attack cruise missiles, improvedsatellite technology and a focus on preventing cyber andcounter-satellite crime are described as a hedge against longer-termstrategic uncertainty.
But it will also be seen as a significant strengthening of Australia's defences. |
