A new film about women’s peaceful resistance in occupied Tibet will be shown tomorrow night at the Madelyn Helling Library. The short film will be followed by a discussion and Q&A with guest speakers Heidi Starr, activist and producer of “Voices of Resistance” on KVMR’s women’s hour radio, and Tibetan Buddhist monk Lama Phuntsho.
Since the Chinese occupation of Tibet, Tibetan nuns have fearlessly staged demonstrations for independence. Countless nuns have been imprisoned. In a deeply personal and lyrical style, the 28-minute film “Satya: A Prayer for the Enemy” focuses on the testimonies of these nuns, revealing continued religious oppression and human rights abuses in occupied Tibet. For over forty years the Tibetans have adhered to the principles of nonviolent social change. Satya seeks to understand the basis and inspiration for this choice of nonviolence, and the spiritual principles that influence their understanding of the enemy.
Filmmaker Ellen Bruno has been active in relief work for over 25 years and had received her masters in film from Stanford University. Winner of: Best of Festival National Educational Film Festival; Best Film for Juvenile Audiences, Film Festival of Youth Germany: Silver Award St. Petersburg International Film Festival, Russia; Best Santa Barbara Film Festival; Catholic Film Workshop Award.
Join Heidi Starr and Lama Phuntsho in a lively discussion following the film about womens’ emerging and advancing roles in Buddhism and the exiled Tibetan society.
This is a free event. Donations graciously accepted to support women escaping Tibet to exile at the Jangchup Nunnery in southern India.
