The Chinese Government has backed away from a new lawthat would have made it compulsory for all new computers sold in thecountry to include censorship software.
The Green Dam Youth Escort program is designed to block pornography, but also gives the Government the power to censor other websites itconsiders harmful - including those with political content.
But now an angry backlash from some of China's 300 million internet users has changed the Government's mind.
State media is quoting an unnamed Government official as saying thesoftware will not be compulsory and describing negative public reactionto the plan as "a misunderstanding."
American software maker Solid Oak is preparing to sue the Chinese makers of Green Dam Youth Escort for copyright infringement.
The Chinese company, Jinhui, is denying it stole the software. |
