China’s 60th Anniversary Art Show Attracts 130,000 Visitors

Sept. 14 (Bloomberg) -- An exhibition featuring works bytop Chinese artists such as Wu Guanzhong and Chen Yifei to markthe 60th year the Communist Party took power in the nation drew130,000 people, according to Fan Di’an, the show’s curator.
The “60 Years of New China Art,” backed by theCultureMinistry, showed 687 paintings and sculptures during its 25-dayrun at the National Art Museum of China. The show ended today.
“We chose works based on the artists’ influence and theirability to reflect the development of art in China since 1949,”said Fan, who’s also the museum’s director, in an interview.China celebrates the anniversary on Oct. 1.
Admission was free, a first for the museum, to givevisitors an insight on history, Fan said.
“The artworks are very interesting even though they werelittle bit political,” said Marie Wyss, a 30-year-old Swissstudent researching Chinese folk art at Peking University, in aninterview at the exhibition.
The oil painting “Grand Founding Ceremony” by Dong Xiwenwas the centerpiece of the exhibition, according to Fan. Paintedin 1952, Dong depicted Mao Zedong and other leaders standing onthe Tiananmen Gate to celebrate the nation’s founding underCommunist Party rule on Oct. 1, 1949.
