After Liu Shaoqi, Deng Xiaoping is the most prominent victim of the Cultural Revolution. His economic reforms are abhorrent to Mao. Deng is exiled to the countryside, but not expelled from the Party. He is rehabilitated in 1973.

Peng Dehuai is the best known among the people attacked here. He was Marshal of the People's Liberation Army, and criticized Mao during the Great Leap Forward. In 1966 he is arrested and maltreated. He dies in captivity in 1974.

Li Jingquan, veteran of the Red Army, is party chief in the province of Sichuan. In June 1967 he is branded 'Enemy of the Party' and dismissed from his functions during a public meeting with 80.000 spectators.
李井泉1927年加入中国共产主义青年团，1930年转入中国共产党。曾任红三十五军政委，红二军团师政委，八路军358旅政委，抗日军政大学总校政委，中共中央晋绥分局书记兼军区政委，二十二兵团政委。中华人民共和国建立后，历任中共川西区党委第一书记，四川省政府主席，中共中央西南局第一书记，成都军区第一政委，第三至五届全国人大常委会副委员长。是中共第八、十、十一届中央委员，第八届中央政治局委员 ，中共中央顾问委员会委员。1989年4月24日卒于北京。

Khrushchev is the Soviet party leader who denounced Stalin's misdeeds in 1955. Eventually he was dismissed and put under house arrest. The 'Chinese Khrushchev' is Liu Shaoqi, considered Mao's designated successor until then.

The title of this poster quotes a big character poster by Mao, in which he accuses other party leaders of treasonous and capitalist points of view and urges his supporters to overthrow his enemies. Big character posters were used extensively during the Cultural Revolution.
Mao, Jiang Qing, Lin Biao (1966-1972)
Three leaders dominate the Cultural Revolution. First of course is Mao, presented almost as a god. The Little Red Book is his Bible; his portrait gives the people strength. A picture of the young Mao becomes a true icon of the revolution. Second is Jiang Qing, Mao's wife, who plays an important role. Nominally she occupies herself with cultural affairs, but in reality she tries to build up a political power base of her own. As she is not very popular, only a few posters are devoted to her. Third is Lin Biao, Minister of Defense. He develops the Mao Cult and tries to become Mao's successor.
