Beijing, China (FT) -- A prominent Chinese human rights lawyer who disappeared without a trace more than a year ago after being snatched by Chinese public security agents has resurfaced in northern China.
Gao Zhisheng was staying at Mount Wutai, a sacred Buddhist site near his home in the northern province of Shanxi, according to another human rights lawyer who spoke to him at the weekend.
"He told me he's in Mount Wutai and taking a walk around, and he doesn't want to be disturbed by the outside world," Li Heping, the lawyer, told the Financial Times.
"I could tell there were people controlling him and his communications and he hung up after only a few minutes."
Mr. Gao had not been heard from since he was taken away by the security agents in February 2009. Human rights groups and some family members had raised concerns that he had been killed while in custody. Various cryptic official statements on his case and whereabouts only heightened confusion.
Attempts to get through to Mr. Gao's mobile phone failed on Monday.
Mr. Gao is a self-taught lawyer who made a name for himself defending members of the outlawed Falun Gong spiritual movement, underground church members and people involved in other sensitive cases.
He was previously arrested in 2006 for his work defending Falun Gong followers. When he has released, he provided graphic testimony about his alleged torture in custody.
His wife and two children escaped from China about a month before he went missing in 2009. They were granted asylum as refugees in the U.S.

The US and the European Union have called on China to investigate the disappearance of Mr Gao.
