BLOODY SCENE: Red waters tell the tale
THE sea runs red with blood as 180 pilot whales are slaughtered.
Even young children watch the horrifying mass killing.
For this brutal annual ritual is deemed a family event on Denmark’s remote Faroe Islands.
The pilot whales – actually part of the dolphin family – are rounded up by boats and driven into a bay in what is known in the town of Hvalvik as “grindadrap”.
Up to 1,000 of the gentle, family orientated mammals, who live in schools of 10 to 30, will be slaughtered this summer.
The killings are carried out by the men, who then share the meat equally among islanders.
Their meat and blubber is a Faroese speciality for tourists and is boiled or served as steaks.
Animal rights campaigners have long criticised the hunt as being cruel and unnecessary.
Whales that are not beached are hauled ashore by their blowholes. Then their dorsal fins are hacked off, cutting through their arteries.
The Faroese, descendents of the Vikings, vigorously defend the tradition to hunt pilot whales, which dates back to the 10th century.
