GM's bid to sell its Hummer brand to a Chinese company has failed, as Beijing's regulators said the gas-guzzling trucks conflicted with the country's environmental policies.
In its announcement, GM said only that it would now "wind down the business in an orderly and responsible manner." The automaker said it would continue to honor Hummer warranties and provide service and parts worldwide.
General Motors did not say why Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Corp. could not complete the deal and did not address the regulatory hurdles.
Earlier, the New Statesman reported that the China's National Development and Reform Commission had "expressed concerns" over the deal and was unlikely to approve it. Tengzhong had pledged to build a more fuel-efficient Hummer to address environmental concerns.
The New Statesman said the sale price was believed to be $100 million to $150 million.
