现代人读“论语”-学而时习之


子曰。“学而时习之,不亦乐乎?有朋自远方来,不亦乐乎?人不知而不愠,不亦君子乎?”
孔子说,“学识了并且时常去温习实践,不是很愉快吗?志同道合的朋友从远方来,不也很快了吗?即使人家不了解我的学识,我也不怨怒,不就是君子的风范吗?”
The master said,"To learn something and regularly practice it-is it not a joy?To have schoolfellows come from distant states-is it not a pleasure?Not to blame when men do not accept you-is it not like a gentleman?"

现代人读“论语”-仁之本


有子曰,“其为人也孝弟,而好犯上者,鲜矣;不好犯上,而好作乱者,未之有也。君子务本,本立而道生。孝弟也者,其为人之本与!”
有子说,“那种孝顺父母、尊敬兄长的人,却喜欢冒犯上级,是极少的;不喜欢冒犯上级,却喜欢造反的人,是没有的。一个有心世道的君子,致力于根本的问题,根本建树起来,仁道由此而生。“孝”和“弟”,应该是行仁的根本吧!”
Master You said,"Those who are filial to their parents and obedient to their elders brothers but are apt to defy their superiors are rare indeed;those who are not apt to defy their superiors,but are apt to stir up a rebellion simply do not exist.The gentleman applies himself to the roots.Only when the roots are well planted will the Way grow.Filial piety and brotherly obedience are perhaps the roots of humanity,are they not?"

子曰,“巧言色令,鲜矣仁!”
孔子说,“花言巧语,伪颜假色,这类人就缺少仁爱之心了。”
The Master said,"Sweet words and a pleasing countenance have indeed little humanity in them!"

现代人读“论语”-吾日三醒吾身



曾子曰,“吾日三醒吾身-为人谋而不忠乎?与朋友交而不信乎?传不习乎?”
曾子说,“我每天三番反省自己,我替人家谋事尽心竭力吗?与朋友交往诚实守信吗?老师传授的学业用心研习了吗?”
Master Zeng said,"I daily thrice examine myself.In counseling men,have I not been wholeheartedly sincere?In associating with friends,have I not been truthful to my word?In transmitting something,have I not been proficient?"

子曰,“道千乘之国,敬事而信,节用而爱人,使民以时。”
孔子说,“领导拥有兵车千辆的国家,从政要谨慎不苟,取信于民;节省费用,爱护人民;征调劳力放在农闲时节。”
The Master said,"In governing a thousand-chariot state,be reverent to your duties and truthful;economize exoenditure and love men;employ the people at proper times."

子曰,“弟子入则孝,出则弟,谨而信,泛爱众,而亲仁。行有余力,则以学文。”
孔子说,“年轻人,在家应孝顺父母,在外要尊敬兄长;言行谨慎诚信;博爱大众,亲近仁人。在躬行实践之后,还有余力就要学习《诗》《书》《礼》《乐》。”
The Master said,"Younger brothers and sons should be filial to their parents at home,obedient to their elder brothers abroad;discreet and truthful,love all the multitude and keep close to humane men.If,after practcing these,they have energy to spare,they should employ it to acquire culture."

理解了。不过标题不好,容易引起歧义,整得好象只有说英语的才是现代人似的。

用“论语中英对照版”这样的比较好。

PS:加个“国学书库”好多了:smile:

现代人读“论语”-贤贤易色

子下月,“贤贤易色;事父母,能竭其力;事君,能致其身,与朋友交;言而有信。虽曰未学,吾必谓之学矣。”

子夏说,“一个人能崇尚贤德,轻视美色;侍奉父母,能竭尽心力;服侍国君,能鞠躬尽瘁;结交朋友,能诚信不欺。这种人虽自谦没受过教育,我也认定他是有学之士。”
Zi-Xia said,"One who loves worthy men instead of beautiful women;who,in serving his parents,can exeeert all his energy;who,in serving the sovereign,cn exhaust his talent;and who,in associating with friends,is truthful to his word-although others may say he has not learnt,I will surely say that he has."

现代人读”论语“-君子不重


子曰,“君子不重。则不威;学则不固。主忠信,无友不如己者。过,则勿惮改。”
孔子说,“君子若不自尊自重,则没有威严;即使学习,也不会巩固。要以忠诚守信为主,且勿结交不如自己的人。有了过错,就不要怕改正。”
The Master said,"If a gentleman is not grave,he will not be aweinspiring.If he laens,he will not be benighted.He keeps wholehearted sincerity and truthfulness as his major principles and does not befriend those beneath him.When he makes a mistake,he is not afraid to correct it."

曾子曰,“慎终,追远,民德归厚矣。”
曾子说,“谨慎送终,追念远祖,自然会使民众品德归于忠厚。”
Master Zeng said,"Show genuine grief at a parent`s death,keep offering sacrifices to them as time goes by,and the people`s moral character shall be reinforced."

现代人读“论语”-闻其政

子禽问于子贡曰,“夫子之于是帮也,必问其政,求之与?抑与之与?”子贡曰,“夫子温、良、恭、俭、让以得之。夫子之求之也,其诸异乎人之求之与?”
子禽向子贡问道,“先生每到一个国家,一定要了解那个国家的政事,使自己央求得来的呢?还是人家告诉他的呢?”子贡说,“先生是用温和、善良、恭敬、俭朴、谦让的美德得来的。先生求闻其政,大概与别人的方法不同吧?”
Zi-qin asked of Zi-gong,"When the Master arrives in a certain state,he always learns about its government.Does he seek,or is it offered to him?"
Zi-gong said,"The Master obtains it through gentleness,benevolence,respectfulness,frugality,and deference.The way the Master seeks it is perhaps different from the way others seek it,is it not?"

现代人读“论语”-父在,观其志

子曰,“父在,观其志;父没,观其行;三年无改于父道者,可谓孝矣。”
孔子说,“父亲在时,观其儿女们的志向;父亲离世,便观其儿女们的行为;三年不改变父亲的准则,便可说履行孝道了。”
The Master said,"When his farther was alive,he observed his aspirations;when his farther died,he observed his deeds.If,for three years,he dose not changes his farther`s Way,he may be said to be filial."

现代人读“论语”-礼之用


有子曰,“礼之用,和为贵。先王之道,斯为美。小大由之,有所不行,知和而和,不以礼节之,亦不可行也。”
有子说,“礼的作用,是处事和谐为贵。古代先王治国之道,也以次为美好,大小事情都遵循礼而行之。但也有行不通的地方,那就是只知道和谐可贵而一味追求和谐,却不以礼来节制和谐,亦不可行啊。”
Master You said,"In the application of the rituals,harmony is most valuable.Of the Way of the former kings,this is the most beautiful part,if it is small or great master master.But if you keep pursuing harmony just because you know harmony,and do not use the rituals to regulate it,it will not work."

现代人读“论语”-信近于义

有子曰。“信近于义,言可复也。恭近于礼,远耻辱也。因不失其亲,亦可宗也。”
有子说,“信用符合道矣,诺言就可以兑现。恭敬合乎礼节,就不致遭受羞辱。依靠关系亲密的人,也就靠得住了。”
Master You said."Only when your truthfulness is close to righteousness can you keep a promise;only when your respectfulness is close to the rituals can you keep humiliation away;only when you love those akin to you are you worthy of esteem."

子曰,“君子食无求饱,居无求安,敏于事而慎于言,就有道而正焉,可谓好学也已。”
孔子说,“一个君子不能以饱食、安居为人生的目标,敏捷处事而言于谨慎,接近有道德的人以匡正自己,这就可以算得上好学了。”
The Master said,"The gentlemen,in eating,dose not seek satiety,in dwelling,dose not seek comfort;He is brisk in action and discreet in speech.He gose to those who possess the Way for rectification.Such a man may be said to love learning indeed."

现代人读“论语”-贫而无诌

子贡曰,“贫而无诌,富而无娇,何如?”子曰,“可也;未若贫而了,富而好礼者也。”
子贡曰,“《诗》云:‘如切如磋,如琢如磨’,其斯之谓与?”子曰,“赐也,始可与言《诗》已矣,告诸往而知来者。”
子贡说,“贫穷毫无诌媚,富有毫无骄横,怎么样?”孔子说,“可以了,却不如贫穷而乐于行道,富有而好于守礼的人呀。”
子贡说,“《诗经》上说的‘如切如磋,如琢如磨’,大概就是这个意思吧?”孔子说,“对呀,现在可以跟你讨论《诗经》了,你能举一反三,从已知推倒未知了。”
Zi-gong said,"A man who is poor but dose not flatter,or rich but dose not swagger-what do you think of him?"
The Master said,"Commendable,but not so good as one who is poor but delights in the Way,or rich but loves the rituals,"
Zi-gong said,"Poetry says:
'Like carving,like filing;'
Is this what it means?"
The Master said,"Ci,I can begin to discuss Poetry with you now.For when I tell you what is past,you know what is to come."

现代人读“论语”-三月不知肉味


子在齐闻《韶》,三月不知肉味,曰,“不图为乐之至于斯也。”
孔子在齐国听到了《韶》乐,有三个月进食不知肉味,说,“想不到这乐曲竟达到了如此的境地。”
When the Master was in Qi,he heard The Succession.For three moons,he could not tell the taste of pork,saying,"I never imagined that learning music could come to thiis!"

子曰,“不患人之不己知,患不知人也。”
孔子说,“不忧虑别人不了解自己,但忧虑自己不了解别人。”
The Master said,"Do not worry about men not knowing you;rather,worry about incapability and ignorance."

子曰,“为政以德,譬如被琛,居其所而众星共之。”
孔子说,“以道德来统帅国政,就像北极星端坐在一定方位上,而满天星斗都环绕它运行。”
The Master said,"He who conducts government with virtue may be likened to the North Star,which,seated in its place,is surrounded by multitudes of other stars."

子曰,“《诗》三百,一言以蔽之,曰,‘思无邪’。”
孔子说,“诗经三百首,一句话可以概括;那就是‘无邪念’!”
The Master said,"The three hundrde poems in Poetry may be covered in one phrase:'Without deviating'"

现代人读“论语”-道之以政



子曰,“道之以政,齐之以刑,民免而无耻;道之以德,齐之以礼,有耻且格。”
孔子说,“用法律政令来引导人民;用刑罚规章来整顿人民,这样,他们可以苟免刑罚而没有廉耻之心。用道德来教化民众;用礼教来统一民众,这样他们不但懂得羞耻,而且能格守规矩。”
The Master said,"If you govern them with decrees and regulate them with punishments,the people will evade them but will have no sense of shame.If you govern them with virtue and regulate them with the rituals,they will have a sense of shame and flock to you."

现代人读“论语”-吾十有五而立志于学



子曰,“吾十有五而立志于学,三十而立,四十而不惑,五十而知天命,六十而耳顺,七十而从心所欲,不逾矩。”
孔子说,“我五十岁有志于学业,到了三十岁学问有成,能够立身处世;四十岁畅通事理而不疑惑;五十岁得知天赋使命;六十岁可听其言,判明是非;七十岁随心所欲,不越规矩。”
The Master said,"At fifteen,I bent my mind on learning;at thirty,I was established;at forty,I was free from delusion;at fifty,I knew the decree of Hearven;at sixty,my ears became subtly perceptive;at senvety,I was able to follow my heart`s desire without overstepping the rules of propriety."

现代人读“论语”-孟懿子问孝


孟懿子问孝。子曰,“无违。”樊迟御,子告之曰,“孟孙问孝于我,我对曰,无违。”樊迟曰,“何谓也?”子曰,“生,事之以礼;死,葬之以礼,祭之以礼。”
孟懿子问孝。孔子回答说,“不要违背礼节!”樊迟为孔子赶车,孔子告诉他说,“孟懿子向我问孝;我回答说‘不要违背礼节’。”樊迟说,“这是什么意思呢?”孔子说,“父母在世时,要以礼服侍他们;父母过世后,要以礼送丧,祭祀他们。”
When Meng Yi-zi asked about filial piety,the Master said,"Do not act contrary."
When Fan Chi was driving,the Master said to him,"When Meng-sun asked me about filial piety,I replied,'Do not act contrary.'"
Fan Chi said,"What do you mean?"
The Master said,"When your parents are alive,serve them in accordance with the rituals;when they die,bury them in accordance with the rituals;offer sacrifices to them in accordance with the rituals."

现代人读“论语”-孟武伯问孝


孟武伯问孝。子曰,“父母唯其疾之忧。”
孟武伯问孝,孔子说,“一个人,如果能使他的父母只为他的疾病担忧,那就可以算作孝了。”
When Meng Wu-bo asked about filial piety,the Master said,"As for your parents,what they should worry about most is your illness."

现代人读“论语”-子游问孝


子游问孝。子曰,“今之孝者,是谓能养。至于犬马,皆能有养;不敬,和以别乎?”
子游问孝。孔子说,“世俗所谓孝,是指赡养父母。其实,人连犬马都能养活;如果对父母只养而不惊,那么养犬马和养父母如何加以区别呢?”
When ZI-you asked about filial piety,the Master said,"Nowadays filial piety merely means being able to feed one`s parents.Even dogs and horses are being fed;without reverence,how can you tell the difference?"

现代人读“论语”-子夏问孝


子夏问孝。子曰,“色难。有事,弟子服其劳;有酒食,先生馔,曾是以为孝乎?”
子夏问孝。孔子说,“和颜悦色事亲难!有事,作子弟的尽力代劳,有酒有肴,让年长者先尽享用,难道这就算使尽孝吗?”
When Zi-xia asked about filial piety,the Master said,"Facial expression is most difficult.When there are chores,the young peoples render their services;when there is wine and food,the seniors drink and eat.Can this alone be considered filial piety?"

现代人读“论语”-回也不愚


子曰,“吾与回言终日,不违如愚。退而省其私,亦足以发,回也不愚。”
孔子说,“我整天给颜回讲学,他从不提出反驳意见,像个蠢人。等他退下,观察其表现行为,却也能发挥,可见颜回并不愚蠢。”
The Master said,"Once I talked with Hui all day;he never contradicted me,as if stupid.When he left,I observed him in private and found that he was able to elucidate.Hui ia not at all stupid."

子曰,“视其所以,观其所由,察其所安。人焉廋哉?人焉廋哉?”
孔子说,“审视他的所作所为,纵观他的由来经理,考察他的动机心志,安于什么不安于什么。这个人怎能掩盖得了呢?”
The Master said,"See what a man dose;contemplate the path he has travesed;examine what he is at ease with.How,then,can he conceal himself?How,then,can he conceal himself?"

子曰,“温故而知新,可以为师矣。”
孔子说,“温习过去所学的知识,能有新收获,新发现,这样就可以当老师了。”
The Master said,"He who keeps reviewing the old and acquiring the new is fit to be a teacher."

子曰,“学而不思则罔,思而不学则殆。”
孔子说,“学习而不思考,就会陷入迷茫;只空想而不学习,那就会误入歧途。”
The Master said,"Learning without thinking is fruitless;thinking without learning is perplexing."

子曰,“君子周而不比,小人比而不周。”
孔子说,“君子能普遍团结人而不互相勾结,小人互相勾结而不能普遍团结人。”

子曰,“由,悔女知之乎!知之为制止,不知为不知,是知也。”
孔子说,“仲由,我教你怎样求知吧!知道就是知道,不知道就是不知道,这才是真正的求知呢。
The Master said,"You,do you understand what I have taught you?If you understand it,say you understand it.If you do not understand it,say you do not understand it.That is knowledge."

现代人读“论语”-子张学干禄

子张学干禄。子曰,“多闻阙疑,慎言其余,则寡尤,多则阙殆,慎行其余,则寡悔。言寡尤,行寡毁,禄在其中矣。”
子张问孔子怎样求得俸禄。孔子说,“多听问,有疑问就保留,谨慎地谈出有自信的部分,就能减少错误;多见识,保留疑问,谨慎地实行其余能确信的部分,就能减少懊悔。发言少有过失,执行少有过错,官职俸禄就在其中了。”
When Zi-zhang asked how to seek an official`s salary,the Master said,"Hear much,leave out what is doubtful,discreetly speak about the rest,and you shall make fewer mistakes.See much,leave out what is hazardous,discreetly practice the rest,and you shall have fewer regrets.If you make fewer mistakes in speech and have fewer regrets in action,an official`s salary lies therein."

哀公问曰,“何为则民服?”孔子对曰,“举直错诸枉,则民服;举枉错诸直,则民不服。”
哀公问道,“怎么样做才会使民众顺服?”孔子答道,“提拔正直者置于邪曲的人之上,人民就会信服;将邪曲的人置于正直者之上,人民就不服了。”
Duke Ai asked,"What must we do to make the people obedient?"The Master replied,"Promote the upright,place them above the crooked,and the people shall be obedient.Promote the crooked,place them above the upright,and the people shall be disobedient."

现代人读“论语”-使民敬

季康子问,“使民敬、忠以劝,如之何?”子曰,“临之以庄,则敬;孝慈,则忠;举善而教不能,则劝。”
季康子问道,“要使民众诚敬、效忠并且奋勉向上,应该怎么办呢?”孔子说,“你以庄重而严肃的态度对待他们,那么人民就诚敬;你抚老爱幼,他们就会效忠;推举善长的人而教育能力差的人,人们就会奋勉向上。”
Ji Kang-zi asked,"How do you make the people reverent,loyal,and multually encouraging?"
The master said,"If you preside over them with dignity,they will be reverent;if you are filial and loving,they will be loyal;if you promote the good and instruct the incapable,they will be mutually encouraging."

现代人读“论语”-为政


或谓孔子曰,“子奚不为政?”子曰,“《书》云,‘孝乎惟孝,友于兄弟,施于有政。’是亦为政,奚其为为政?”
有人问孔子,“夫子为什么不去从政?”孔子说,“《尚书》上说。‘孝呀,只有孝顺父母最重要,再对兄弟能友爱,把这些风气影响到政治中去。’这也就是参与政治了,为什么要为官才算是从政呢?”
Someone said to The Master,"Sir,why do you not participate in government?"
The Master said,"History says,'How exceedingly filial you are!And how kind to your younger brothers!You can extend this to the officialdom.'-That is also participating in government.Why must one personally participate in government?"

现代人读“论语”-十世可知也


子张问,“十世可知也?”子曰,“殷因于夏礼,所损益可知也;周因于殷礼,所损益可知也。其或继周者,虽百世可知也。”
子张问道,“今后十年的世事能够预先知道吗?”孔子说,“殷代继承夏代的礼制,废除的和增设的,都还可以知道;周代沿袭殷代的礼制,其废除的和增设的也都可以知道。今后有朝代继承周的做法,既是一百代,大概也是可以知道的。”
Zi-zhang asked,"Then dynasties hence,are things predictable?"The Master said,"The Yin followed the rituals of the Xia;what has been reduced and augmented is known to us.The Zhou followed the rituals of the Yin;what has been reduced and augmented is known to us.Whoever may succeed the Zhou,even a hundred dynasties hence,things are predictable."

现代人读“论语”-非其鬼而祭之


子曰,“非其鬼而祭之,诌也。见义不为,无勇也。”
孔子说,“不该祭祀的鬼神,却去祭祀它,就是阿谀诌媚啊!眼见合乎道义的事也不挺身而出,就是懦弱无勇啊!”
The Master said,"To offer sacrifices to spirits other than those of your qwn ancestors is flattery.To see something you ought to do and not to do it is want of courage."

孔子谓季氏,“八佾舞于庭,是可忍也,孰不可忍也!”
孔子批评季氏说,“他竟然用六十四人在家庙庭院中表演天子享用的八佾舞蹈,这样的事情能容忍,还有什么不能容忍呢?”
The Master said of Ji Shi,"Eight rows of dancers danced in his court.If this could be tolerated,what could not be tolerated?"

现代人读“论语”-三家者以《雍》彻

三家者以《雍》彻。子曰,“‘相维辟公,天子穆穆,’奚取于三家之堂?”
孟孙、叔孙、季孙三家彻祭时用《雍》诗。孔子说,“《雍》诗上说,‘诸侯恭敬助祭,天子肃穆主祭。’这样的诗句怎能取用在这三家的厅堂上呢?”
The men of the three houses removed the offerings singing Harmony.
The Master said,
"’Assisted by the various princes,
The Son of Heaven stands reverent and majestic.
How could this apply to the hall of the three houses?’"

现代人读“论语”-人而不仁


子曰,“人而不仁,如礼何?人而不仁,如乐何?”
孔子说,“做人却没有仁德,他怎么能实行礼呢?做人却没有仁心,他如何运用乐呢?”
The Master said,"If a man is not humane,what can he do with the rituals?If a man is not humane,what can he do with music?"

林放问礼之本。子曰,“大哉问!礼,与其奢也,宁俭;丧,与其易也,宁戚。”
林放请问礼的本质。孔子说,“这个问题意义重大呀!在礼仪上,与其奢侈,宁可俭朴;在丧事上,与其樊如,宁可悲痛。”
When Lin Fang asked about the essence of the rituals,the Master said,"What an enormous question!In the rituals,frugality is preferred to extravagance;in mourning,excessive grief is preferred to lightheartedness."

现代人读“论语”-季氏旅于泰山

季氏旅于泰山。子谓冉有曰,“女弗能救与?”对曰,“不能。”子曰,“呜呼!曾谓泰山不如林放乎?”
季氏(以天子礼)去祭祀泰山。孔子对冉有说,“你不能劝阻吗?”冉有回答说,“不能。”孔子说,“无乎!难道泰山之神还不如林放(那样的懂礼)吗!”
When Ji Shi was about to perform the Display Sacrifice at Mount Tai,the Master said to Ran You,"Could you not stop it?"
Ran You replied,"No,I could not."
The Master said,"Alas!Is it possible that Mount Tai is not as good as Lin Fang?"
