子贡方人。子曰，“赐也贤乎哉？夫我则不暇。”
子贡议论别人。孔子说，“端木赐，你就那么好吗？我就没这闲工夫。”
When Zi-gong was disparaging someone,the Master said,"Ci,are you good enough now?As for me,I do not have the leisure."

The Master said,"He who neither presupposes deception nor suspects untruthfulness,yet discerns it all beforehand,is worthy indeed!"

微生亩谓孔子曰，“丘何为是栖栖者与？无乃为佞乎？”孔子曰，“非敢为佞也，疾固也。”

微生亩对孔子说，“丘啊，你为何如此忙忙碌碌呢？该不是为了炫耀自己的辩才吧？”
孔子说，“不敢炫耀口才，是痛恨那些顽固不化的人啊！”

Wei-sheng Mu said to the Master,"Qiu,why are yoou so restless?Are you not parading you eloquence?"
The Master said,"Not that I dare parade my eloquence,but that I am troubled by the benightedness."

Someone said,"'Requite enmity with favor.'What do you think of that?"
The Master said,"Then how do you requite favor?Requite enmity with imparliality;requite favor with favor."

子曰，“莫我知也夫！”子贡曰，“何为其莫知子也？”子曰，“不怨天，不尤人，下学而上达。知我者其天乎！”
孔子说，“为什么没有人了解我啊！”
子贡说，“怎么能说没有人了解老师呢？”孔子说，“不怨恨上天，不责备他人，学习切身的知识而通达高深的道理，知道我的大概只有上天吧！”
The Master said,"Nobody will ever understand me!"
Zi-gong said,"Why will nobody ever understand you,sir?"
The Master said,"I neither resent Heaven nor blame men.I learnt lower things and perceive things.The only one who understands me is perhaps Heaven!"

子曰，“贤者辟世，其次辟地，其次辟色，其次辟言。”
子曰，“作者七人矣。”
孔子说，“贤能的人避开乱世，次一等的人避开乱邦，再次一等的人能避开难看的脸色，更词义等的人避开难听的恶言。”
孔子说，“这样做的人已经有七位了。”
The Master said,"Worthy men flee the world;the next category flee a place;thethird category flee a facial expression;the fourth category flee a remark."
The Master said,"Those who did so numbered seven."

子路宿于石门。晨门曰，“奚自？”子路曰，“自孔氏。”曰，“是知其不可而为之者与？”
子路在石门借宿，早晨进城时，守门人问，“从哪里来啊？”子路说，“从孔子哪里来。”守门人说，“就是那位明知道行不通却非要去做的人吗？”
Zi-lu lodged at Stone Gate.The morning gate-keeper said,"Where from?"
Zi-lu said,"From Kong Shi`s place."
The gate-keeper said,"Is it the man who knows it cannot be done yet keeps trying?"

现代人读“论语”－三年不言


子张曰，“《书》云‘高宗谅阴，三年不言’。何谓也？”子曰，“何必高宗，古之人皆然。君薨，百官总己以听于冢宰三年。”
子张说，“《书经》上说，‘殷高宗守孝，三年不论政事’，是什么意思呢？”
孔子说，“不一定是殷高宗，古时候的人都是如此。国君去世了，继承君三年不问者政事，各部门的官员都要听命于宰相。”
Zi-zhang said,"History says,'Gao-zong,in his mourning hut,for three years did not speak'.What does it mean?"
The Master said,"Why must it be Gao-zong?Men of antiquity all did the same.After a king`s demise,the hundred officials assumed total responsibility over their own departments,submitting themselves to the jurisdiction of the prime minister for three years."

子曰，“上好礼，泽民易使也。”
孔子说，“领导者讲究礼仪，老百姓就容易听从使唤了。”
The Master said,"If the sovereeign loves the rituals,the people will be easy to employ."

原壤夷俟。子曰，“幼而不孙弟，长而无述焉，老而不死，是为贼。”以杖叩其胫。
原壤伸开两腿坐在地上接待孔子。孔子说，“你小时候不懂礼貌，长大了无所作为，老了还不死去，真实祸害！”说着用手杖敲他的消退。
Yuan Rang sat with his legs outstretched,waiting.The Mastersaid,"When young,you were immodest and disobedient;when grown up,you had nothing to recommend you;when old,you refuse to die.You are indeed a pest!"And,with his staff,he tapped him on the shank

现代人读“论语”－厥党童子将命


厥党童子将命，或问之曰，“益者与？”子曰，“吾见其居于位也，见其与先生并行也，非求益者也，欲速成者也。”
厥党的一个童子在传达宾主的谈话，有人问孔子说，“是个求上进的人吗？”
孔子说，“我见到他大模大样坐在席位上，见到他与年长的人并肩而行。他不是个求上进的人，是个想急于求成的人。”
A lad from Que Township served as go-between.Someone asked the Master,saying,"Is he one seeking progress?"
The Master said,"I saw him ensconced in a seat;I saw him walking side by side with his elders.He is not one seeking progress but one eager to become an adult."

现代人读“论语”－位灵公问陈


卫灵公问陈于孔子。孔子对曰，“咀豆之事，则尝闻之矣；军旅之事，未之学也。”明日遂行。


卫灵公向孔子询问军对布阵的方法。孔子答道，“有关礼仪的事，我曾经听说过；军事方面的事，我没有学过。”次日孔子就离开了卫国。


When Duke Ling of Wei asked the Master about battle array,the Master replied,"Of ritual affairs,I haveheard some;of military affairs,I have learnt nothing."The following day,he departed.

现代人读“论语”－在陈绝粮


在陈绝粮，从者病，莫能兴。子路愠见曰，“君子亦有穷乎？”子曰，“君子固穷，小人穷斯滥矣。”
孔子在陈国断绝了粮食，随行的人饿的病倒了，子路生气地来见空子，“君子也有穷得走投无路的时候吗？”
In Chen,they ran out of food.The followers became so weak that none could rise.Zi-lu,wiyh conspicuous resentment,said,"So,the gentleman is also susceptible to adversity?"
The Master said,"The gentleman rests at ease in adversity;the small man,once reduced to adversity,becomes reckless."

现代人读“论语”－一以贯之

子曰，“赐也，女以予为多学而识之者与？”对曰，“然，非与？”曰，“非也，予一以贯之。”
孔子问子贡，“赐啊，你认为我是多学博记的人吗？”
子贡答，“是的，难道不是这样吗？”
孔子说，“不，我是用一个基本道理把它们贯穿始终的。”
The Master said,"Ci,do you regard me as someone who learns much and commits it all to memory?"
Zi-lu replied,"Yes.Are you not?"
The Master said,"No.I use one string to thread it all together."

The Master said,"The only one who achieved good government through nonaction was perhaps Shun!For what did he do?He conducted himselfrespectfully facing due south,that is all."

现代人读“论语”－子张问行


子张问行。子曰，“言忠信，行笃敬，虽蛮貊之邦行矣。言不忠信，行不笃敬，虽州里行乎哉？立则见其参于前也，在舆则见其倚于衡也，夫然后行。”子张书诸绅。
子张问如何很好处世行事。孔子说，“言而有信，行为忠厚，即使在边远的地方也能行的通；说话言而无信，行为中后，即使在本乡本土也行不通吧？站立时就好像这些准则站立在自己面前，乘车时就如同这些准则刻在衡木上，这样才能行事通顺。”
When Zi-zhang asked how to get on in the world,the Master said,"If your speech is wholeheartedly sincere and truthful and your deeds honest and reverent,even in barbarian states,you will get on.If your speech is neither wholeheartedly sincerenor truthful,and your deeds neither honest nor reverent,even in your native place,can you get on?Standing,you seem to see these tenets greeting you infront;in a carriage,you see them leaning against the yoke.Only then will you get on."
Zi-zhang worte it down on his girdle.

子曰，“直哉史鱼！邦有道，如矢；邦无道，如矢。君子哉蘧伯玉！邦有道，则任；邦无道，则可卷而怀之。”
孔子说，“史鱼真是正值的人啊！国家政治清明时，他像箭一样直；国家政治腐败时，他仍像箭一样直。蘧伯玉真是君子啊！国家清明时，他就出来做官；国家政治腐败时，他又抽身隐退。”
The Master said,"How straight Shi Yu was!When the state possessed the Way,he was like an arrow;when the state lost the Way,he was like an arrow.What a genteman Qu Bo-yu is!When the state possessed the Way,he took title;when the state lost the Way,he retired it."

子曰，“可与言而不与之言，失人；不可与言而与之言，失言。知者不失人亦不失言。”
孔子说，“值得与之交谈的人却没有与他交谈，会失落其人；不应该与之交谈的人却与他谈话，会失落己言。聪明的人既不错过好的交谈对象也不会白费口舌。”
The Master said,"If a man is worth talking to and do not talk to him,you lose a man;if a man is not worth talking to and you talk to him,you lose your words.The man of neither loses a man nor loses his words."

子曰，“志士仁人，无求生以害仁，有杀身以成仁。”
孔子说，“志士仁人不能为了贪生怕死而损害仁德，只有牺牲自己以成就仁德。”
The Master said,"Lofty-minded men and humane men do not seek to preserve their lives at the expense of humanity;rather,they give their lives to attain humanity."

子贡问为仁。子曰，“公欲善其事，必先利其器。居是邦也，事其大夫之贤者，有其士之仁者。”
子贡询问怎样做到仁，孔子说，“工匠想要做好他的事情，必须首先磨快工具。居住在这个国家，要侍奉那里大夫中的贤者，应该结交他们中有仁德的人。”
When Zi-gong asked hoe to cultivate humanity,the Master said,"If an artisan wishes to perfect his craft,he must first sharpen his tools.Living in this state,serve the worthy of its ministers and befriend the humane of its man."

现代人读“论语”－颜渊问为邦


颜渊问为邦。子曰，“行下之时，乘殷之轲，服周之冕，乐则《韶》《舞》。放郑声，远佞人。郑声淫，佞人殆。”
颜回询问治理国家的方法。孔子说，“用夏代的立法令，乘殷代的车辆，穿戴周代的礼服，乐舞则用《韶》；禁绝郑国的乐曲，疏远奸佞的小人。因为郑国的乐曲淫荡，奸佞的小人危险。”
When Yan Yuan asked how to govern a state,the Master said,"Follow the Xia calendar,ride in the Yin coach,and wear the Zhou crown.As for music,imitate The Succession and Military Exploits.Ban the songs of Zheng and keep away from glib-tongued men.For the songs of Zheng are obscene and blib-tongued man are dangerous."

子曰，“人无远虑，必有近忧。”
孔子说，“人没有长远的谋虑，必定有眼前的忧患。”
The Master said,"If a man does not have long-range considerations,he will surely incur imminent afflictions."

The Master said,"Be more demanding with yourself and less so with others and you shall keep resentment away."

The Master said,"A gentleman considers righteousness his major principle:he practices it in accordance with the rituals,utters it in modest terns,and fulfils it with truthfulness.A gentleman indeed!"

The Master said,"In associating with others,whom have I disparaged?Whome have I praised?If I have praised any,they are those who have been put to the test,the kind of people that made it possible for the Three Dynasties to follow the straight path."

The Master said,"What the gentleman seeks is the Way and not food.If he farms,hunger lies therein;if he learns,an official`s salary lies therein.What the gentleman worries about is the Way and not poverty."

孔子曰，“君子有三戒，少之时，血气未定，戒之在色；及其壮也，血气方刚，戒之在斗；及其老也，血气既衰，戒之在得。”
孔子说，“君子要警戒三种事，年轻时，血气尚未稳定，要警戒迷恋女色；到了壮年，血气方刚，要警戒争强好胜；到了老年，血气衰弱，要警戒贪得无厌。”
The Master said,"The gentleman has three abstentions:in adolescence when his sap has not settled,he abstains from sex;in the prime of life when his sap is exuberant,he abstains from belligerence;in old age when his sap has waned,he abstains from greed."

孔子曰，“君子有三畏，畏天命、畏大人、畏圣人之言。小人不之天命而不畏也，狎大人，侮圣人之言。”
孔子说，“君子敬畏三件事，敬畏天命、敬畏有德行的人、敬畏圣人的话。小人因为不知道天命而不敬畏，轻视有德行的人、亵渎圣人的话。”
The Master said,"The gentleman has three decree of Heaven;he fears great men;he fears the sage men`s words.The small man,not knowing the decree of Heaven,does not fear it;he scorns great man and mocks the sage men`s words."

孔子曰，“生而知之者上也，学而知之这次也；困而学之，又其次也；困而不学，民斯为下矣。”
孔子说，“天生就通晓事理的人最优秀，通过学习儿童小时里的人次一等，遇到困难采取学习的人又次一等。遇到困难还不学习，这种认识最下等的。”
The Master said,"Those who knows it at birth belong to the highest category;those who know it through learning belong to the seconed category;those who learn it when baffled belong to the third category;thoes who do not learn even when baffled-such peole belong to the lowest category."
